The term "scuffing" was originally defined with reference to phenomena (Fig. 17) on the running face of chromed piston rings. The discolorations and the so-called "alligator skin" on the chromium plated surface are indicators of thermal overloading. If use of the term "scuffing" is extended to other materials as well, then all phenomena indicating thermal overstressing of the ring running face may be captured under it.

The distinction between scuffing and seizure is fluid. Common to both terms is tribological overloading. In the case of severe seizure the surface of the piston rings will show heavy scoring and/or a welding of foreign material [28, 29].
